Meizu turned 21 today. As we know, the company was founded in 2003. as an MP3 player manufacturer and pioneered China’s emerging smartphone industry at the time.
On July 4, 2022 Geely’s subsidiary Xingji Shidai acquired a controlling stake in Meizu shares, and in 2023 it became part of the newly formed Xingji Meizu Group. The group has filed for a return to the international market, starting with the Asian continent.
On January 29 this year, a distribution contract was signed in Shanghai between DreamSmart (a holding company of Xingji Meizu Group, co-founded by Li Shufu and Shen Ziyu) and Malaysia’s Digital Way Group. The two parties will work together to expand overseas markets, mainly in Southeast Asia, and provide MYVU AR smart glasses to consumers in 11 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. On February 6, Meizu 21 (M461H) received approval for official distribution in the UAE.
On February 18th, Meizu announced that it is ending the development of traditional “smartphones” and is fully entering the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with investments in “tomorrow’s devices”, and the long-awaited flagship Meizu 21 PRO will not see the light of day. However, then under the fans’ pressure Xingji Meizu decided to introduce the phone as its first AI terminal to highlight its advantages over competing products from other manufacturers. The presentation took place on February 29.
It emerged yesterday, DreamSmart Group plans to list in Hong Kong this year and capitalize on growing investor enthusiasm for the artificial intelligence. The company is currently cooperating with CICC and Huatai Securities to discuss listing details, and the valuation could exceed 15 billion yuan (about $2.1 billion).
