Yesterday at the conference in Zhuhai we officially saw Meizu 16s, this year’s flagship of the company. It is bigger, better and more powerful than last year’s Meizu 16th.
As for the design, Jack Wong has the main credit for it. The bezels are thinner, measuring 4.2 mm. The body is glass with a metal frame. The 6.2-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, which uses COF connection technology and has curved corners, has an enviable screen to body ratio of 91.53% and a resolution of 1080×2232 pixels. The display has VDE Blue-light certified protection, which blocks up to 33% of harmful blue light. The option for DC dimming has also been added, which eliminates flicker at reduced brightness.
As with the 16th series, the built-in fingerprint scanner is supplied by Goodix, but this time it is better and faster. Works better with wet hands and supports AliPay, WeChat Pay and Google Pay.
Meizu 16s comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (7nm) processor, which features the highest performance on the Android market at the moment, and in three variants, depending on RAM and internal space – 6/8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128/256GB UFS 2.1. The Adreno 640 GPU of the Snapdragon 855 works with Meizu’s Hyper Gaming technology for smooth and effortless gaming. There is also mEngine 3.0, which provides absolute enjoyment and immersion in the games. The SIM slot is located at the bottom of the phone, where the 3.5 mm jack is usually missing, and there is no option for an SD card.
The phone has a dual rear camera located in the upper left part of the back. The main sensor is the 48MP Sony IMX586 with an aperture of f/1.7 and 4-axis optical image stabilization. Thanks to the Quad Bayer filter, the Meizu 16s can take impressive photos in low light. The additional sensor is the 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 with an aperture of f/2.6. The camera has many features, such as double Super night scene, portrait bokeh, artificial intelligence scene recognition and up to 3x zoom without loss of quality.
The front camera has also been improved. It makes its world debut Samsung 3T2, 20MP f/2.2, which is the world’s smallest sensor and was developed specifically for the new trends in camera placement in the display. The selfie camera is equipped with HDR+, Meizu’s ArcSoft algorithm, supports face unlocking in just 0.2 seconds.
Another key upgrade of the Meizu 16s is the larger battery capacity, increased from 3010mAh in the Meizu 16th to 3600mAh. This increase in capacity leads to a slightly greater thickness of the phone – 7.6mm compared to 7.3mm in its predecessor. And yet, the Meizu 16s is still thinner than the Galaxy S10 and Xiaomi Mi 9, which have smaller batteries, and weigh only 165 grams. Its dimensions are 151.9×73.4×7.6mm.
The Meizu 16s already has an NFC payment module, for the first time since the Meizu PRO 6 Plus since the end of 2016. There are also stereo speakers for surround sound.
Meizu 16s comes with Flyme 7.3 based on Android 9 Pie. Flyme 7.3 contains most of the new features we’ll see in Flyme 8. The smartphone is available in three colors – carbon black, which has a nano-coated carbon fiber texture, pearl white and phantom blue with a gradient inspired by the Mozambique Strait.
