Zhuhai Meizu Technology Co., Ltd. has applied for registration of a utility model, as evidenced by the patent application issued by the Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO).
It is a model of a pop-up camera, accompanied by a description and illustration of the lifting mechanism. The date of the application is August 7, 2018 and the date of its acceptance is March 22, 2019, as the certification notification number is CN208638397U.
The patent application does not necessarily mean that one day we will see a Meizu smartphone with a pop-up camera, but who knows… It is a well-known fact that the company’s founder and CEO Jack Wong is opposed to the notches in the phones in iPhone style. However, Meizu has released two models with notches (Meizu X8 and Meizu Note 9), but so far they are only from the budget sector. At this stage, the company’s flagships have very thin symmetrical frames at the top and bottom of the screen.
Perhaps the desire to realize a bezel-less display, without at the expense of a notch, albeit water drop shaped, has led to this development of a pop-up camera. Recently, Jack Wong had said that he did not like the trend for a bezel-less display through a hole in it for a selfie camera.
