We all know that Meizu is a brand that pays more attention to uniqueness, to its recognizable design. Until the Meizu 17 series, the phones were distinguished by their minimized front bezels, in which the selfie camera was located. Although Huang Zhang does not like the perforations in the display, since last year Meizu has joined this trend in order to achieve completely bezelless smartphones.
Despite the perforated screens, Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro also have their own distinctive features. One of the main advantages was the completely equal weight distribution in the upper and lower half of the phones. An original decision was that the perforation on the right should have a useful function – to show the battery charge.
In this year’s Meizu 18 series, however, Huang Zhang has abandoned the symmetrical weight distribution, the achievement of which is most likely associated with very high costs. But here we have an original application of the perforation for the selfie camera, which this time is in the middle – it is used as an LED indicator for missed notifications.
Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro are the company’s most expensive smartphones to date, with the exception of some limited combo packages, such as Meizu 17 Pro Hsiao Fang Pottery Art. They are more expensive than similar models of other brands, which is a great courage on the part of Huang Zhang.
However, it should be noted that this time the Meizu 18 series is really very good. It uses Samsung’s most expensive QHD+ (2K+) 120Hz Super AMOLED curved screen, the leading Snapdragon 888 mobile platform, Vapor Chamber liquid cooling, Qualcomm’s new generation of ultrasonic fingerprint unlocking, the new generation of SMA OIS optical image stabilization by using so-called “smart metals”.
The Pro version’s camera includes the 50-megapixel S5KGN1 main sensor, Dual Pixel 1.2μm and 1/1.31” optical format. The ultra-wide sensor is 32-megapixel and the image quality is much better. The front 44-megapixel camera is equipped with AI ultra-clear portrait mode. It supports 40W wired and 40W wireless fast charging of the large 4500mAh battery, plus the significantly improved Flyme 9 system.
It is safe to say that the Meizu 18 series provides users with a perfect experience. But the Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro are not Meizu’s highlights for this year.
Last year, the company released only two high-end smartphones – Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro. The goal was to reduce R&D costs, follow firmware updates for fewer models, and more. In addition, the struggle for supremacy in the budget and mid-range sectors is fierce.
Three days ago, the company also closed its subsidiary Zhuhai Meizu Software Co., Ltd. It was established in October 2008, with Huang Xiuzhang as its representative. The software company’s business scope included software development for multimedia players, design and development of integrated circuits and design and development of software for mobile communication equipment.
This year, Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro were expected to be joined by a more affordable model. Now, however, it is rumored that this will again be a flagship with Snapdragon 888. It is Meizu 18T, which will have a larger screen, more powerful Dual 50MP camera configurations, a larger 5500mAh battery, fast charging will be upgraded up to 65W. It can be said that Meizu 18T will be the best flagship of Meizu in 2021.
Those for whom Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro are not enough, can wait for Meizu 18T.
